Roman and Moorish rule
After the Carthaginians, the Romans took over. They called Ibiza “Ebusus” and enriched the island with their architecture and roads. The Moorish rulers then introduced new agricultural techniques and architectural styles, which still adorn the landscape as surviving forts and towers. In addition to these stone remains, of course, all these cultures also influenced local cuisine, music and art.
Christian reconquest and Catalan influence
After the Christian reconquest in the 13th century, the Catalans annexed the island and introduced their language and customs, which are still an important part of Ibizan identity. The characteristic whitewashed houses, now a symbol of the island, can be traced directly back to this period.
