San José
San Jose (also known as San Joseph de la Talaia) is situated in the west of Ibiza. We love this village! It is small, cosy, and has several good restaurants and shops. Many beautiful houses are located in this area. The village is old. It really started with the church, which led to the growth of the population in the 17th century. Before that, people lived mainly in the area of San Antoni, but the locals thought this was a little too far to walk. And who can blame them!
Restaurants
The best-known restaurant is El Destino. Wonderful tapas. We recommend them! You will have to reserve in advance, particularly in the summer months because it gets busy here. Destino has been making a name for itself for some years. If you walk around the back of the church, you will find Can Manyanet, a nice restaurant where you can eat typically Ibizan dishes, such as Sofrit Pages – casserole of lamb, chicken, potatoes and saffron, for €5.00, while you admire the view of the flowers in the beautiful garden.
In Bar Bernat Vinya, elderly gentlemen gather to play cards. And in the cool summer garden at Es Raco Verde, you can listen to Jazz and Blues while enjoying a pleasant evening with your family and friends.
Shops
Can you do any shopping in San Jose? Yes, you can. There are many different shops. From designer boutiques to simple tourist shops. For a major shopping expedition, it is better to go to Ibiza town. Even so, San Jose offers a great shopping experience, which can be very enjoyable. It also offers a few small supermarkets where you can get supplies for your holiday.
Other sights
The village is small and certainly not spectacular, but very cozy. You can see how the older inhabitants still live here. The area does not have much new construction, even around San Jose, which means it has retained its authenticity. The parish church of Sant Jose is, by the way, a beautiful church to visit, if you would like to take part in some cultural activity. Unfortunately, many of the original works of art have been damaged or destroyed during the civil war of 1936.
You will probably drive through this town at some point, but do take the time to have some lunch or dinner here or to drink a coffee, or rent a home that is not too far away from the town.
