In search of Atlantis in Ibiza
Ibiza’s Atlantis “THE mythical place” that every tourist has heard of, but no local will tell you where it is. So naturally, after more than 5 years on the island, we at House Rent Ibiza wanted to find this spiritual place in Ibiza!
With some vague coordinates, we set out. First we drove in the direction of Cala D’hort. In fact, our starting point was the viewing plateau, where you can best see the rock Es Vedra. From there we climbed up hill toward an old watchtower.
The “Torre des Savinar” was built in the 16th century as a defense observation tower. The guards could then look out for the dreaded pirates and used light signals to warn the population, who could then flee to the forests or churches.

Deep below us we could see the remains of an ancient city, but how were we supposed to get there? Finally, we climbed the entire mountain and arrived at the start of the hike. There were many cars parked, so should you go on this tour, please park at the appropriate parking lot and not at the Es Vedra viewing platform!
The beginning of the trail is marked by two magical stone circles built by hippies and used in various ceremonies. The custom is that everyone, who begins the descent, must leave a pebble or personal item on the circle.
The first part of the descent is immediately strenuous. The undefined path is littered with debris and turns into pointy rocks and they sometimes have 45-degree angles.
Somewhere halfway there is a cave with a mural of an Asian God.
We forgot to check, but we think it took us 30 minutes to get to the dunes. Dunes? Yes, the last 80 meters down consists of dune sand!

The view of “the sunken city” was breathtaking. For us, it had a bit of the atmosphere of the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. The remains of the walls have stairs, pools of water, terraces and reliefs carved from the soft stone walls.

Had we really discovered the legendary Utopian city of Atlantis? Well, we now have to disappoint you….
What we photographed is an old quarry whose stones were cut from the rock to build the watchtowers and walls of Dalt Vila (Ibiza’s old town), these to protect the town from the pirates. The remains give this distinct shape and the sculptures were made by hippies or tourists.
It took us a lot of effort to get there and even more effort to make the climb up through the shifting sand of the dunes. The muscles in our calves and our lungs burned all over. But this hike is definitely worth it!
