Last Saturday we took a tour of the vineyards of Sa Cova. It is the oldest winery (bodega) in Ibiza. The plot is located in the campo of San Mateu. We were warmly welcomed by Juan, the owner, who runs the business with his daughter and son-in-law.

Villa Casa Tranquila is your own paradise in Ibiza! Here you will have little noise and enjoy an oasis of tranquility.
Sa Cova started as a hobby that got out of hand. Juan has a huge passion for wines and started producing wine commercially in 1990.
Contrary to what you might suspect, Ibiza has a long history of wine production dating back to the Phoenicians, some 700 years before Christ. In the mid-19th century, when phylloxera crippled wine production in Europe, Ibiza was long spared by its remote location. When the rest of Europe had already overcome the disease, it did not arrive in Ibiza until the 1930s. This marked the end of wine production on the island.

After this, no wine was grown for times until Juan revived this tradition.
After getting some information and a tour of the bodega, it was time to taste the wines. Juan conjured up cheeses and glasses and we sought out the (still) warm October sunshine. Sa Cova makes 5 different wines. The wine is mainly found on the island, but is also exported to Germany on a small scale.
