Where do we go for Christmas and New Year's?
The Spanish holidays “Día de la Constitución” (Constitution Day on Dec. 6) and the “Immaculate Conception of Mary” (on Dec. 8) have barely passed and we already received the first greeting “Feliz año Nuevo!” from the girl behind the supermarket checkout counter. “A Happy New Year” but what about the greeting “Merry Christmas”? And where is the delicious game at the butchers for our Christmas meal? Besides rabbit and the occasional wild boar, there is little wildlife to be found in Ibiza.
Christmas is celebrated at home, traditionally with the family, where mom makes a stew that includes black pudding and bacon!
And on New Year’s Eve, you all watch TV just before midnight. Sitting down, with your bowl of 12 grapes on your lap, you look at the clock tower of Madrid’s Sol Square and consume 1 grape at each stroke of the clock. Take out the seeds beforehand, it swallows a little easier!
Spaniards stay in until well after 12 p.m., and then go all dolled up to a party at the family pub, a neighborhood disco or a big club. So your Ibiza neighbors don’t take to the streets at noon with fireworks to wish each other a Happy New Year.
This year, many restaurants closed their doors in late October only to reopen at Easter, and the club Pacha is undergoing renovations.
